Sheldon Smith bolsters the AI game of SEK

Sheldon has been part of the team since the start of 2026. In less than a year, he has driven major leaps in developing and leading the agency's in-house AI expertise, and been a part of building SEK Brand OS, the new AI toolset now adopted by SEK.

Sheldon Smith's professional background is a diverse one. Over his career he has founded and run a creative consultancy, produced advertising and marketing for major players in the music and fashion industries, and sharpened his creative eye as a part-time fashion photographer.

Most recently, before moving to Finland, he spent nearly 13 years at New York University's Tandon School of Engineering, where he served as Senior Director of Creative Strategy and Digital Communications. Sheldon's roots lie at the intersection of creative work and technology — and at SEK, his role is to lead AI Governance & Product.

"At NYU, I saw the impact AI was going to have on marketing and communications. I set out to deepen my understanding of AI and data science, and studied these subjects at the Wharton School of Business," Sheldon says, describing his AI-driven career shift.

From the speed of New York to Finnish deliberation

Sheldon moved to Finland with his family from New York in early 2025. New York is a global epicenter of business, brands and technological development — a place with no quiet moments. Helsinki has been a different reality, but a compelling one:

"New York taught me speed; Helsinki has taught me depth. You need both," Sheldon says, summing up the key difference between the two mindsets. In his view, the Finnish marketing world's approach to AI is markedly more measured than the American one.

"Iconic Finnish brands tend to lean slightly conservative. The risk is getting stuck in place just as new technology is accelerating development. On the other hand, Finnish companies also show a good kind of restraint: there's a real desire to bring AI into creative work, processes and brand in a sustainable way. The pace is deliberate."

In Finland, Sheldon could have joined forces with any number of agencies. But his outlook and values aligned best with SEK.

"I believe in SEK's vision of what the future of brands, creativity and society looks like. Here, people and sustainability are front and center. People at SEK are genuinely curious about what's happening in our culture, not just chasing short-lived trends. That's refreshing — and exactly what I was looking for!"

AI is changing creativity, but people remain its source

AI has raised plenty of questions about whether the story of human creativity is coming to an end. Sheldon sees it differently. New tools are leveling the playing field, since production is faster and easier than ever — but they don't replace human taste. As AI-generated clutter becomes more common, judgment and curation matter more than ever.

"Creativity has never been about pumping out as much as possible, as fast as possible — it's about understanding which ideas are actually worth pursuing. AI sharpens the ideas of those who know how to use it smartly. Creativity only falls flat if we let the machine do the thinking for us."
